Life at Lavenders in West Malling

Lavenders has 53 bedrooms all of which are single

Lavenders care home was first established in 1983 when the current proprietor’s parents came across an elegant Regency family house in the Kent countryside. The house, packed with original features, grabbed their attention due to its location: a beautiful countryside setting, but situated within an easy walk of West Malling’s pretty high street. Inspired, Keith and Madeleine Webb decided to use their experience of working within the health and hospitality sectors to turn Lavenders into a residential care home.

These days their son Marcus – supported by his wife, Emma – continues what his parents started. The Webb family vision has always been to create a beautiful, secure and happy home for the elderly, where they can live confident in the knowledge that all their needs are cared for. And Marcus and his long-established team achieve exactly that.

Modern, purpose-built accommodation has been added over the decades and Lavenders is now home to 53 residents, who are happy to call this rural idyll their home.

Individual choice

We treat everyone as an individual here at Lavenders. We respect our residents’ privacy and personal space and we understand that some people want peace and quiet and space for quiet contemplation, while others like a buzzy atmosphere and lots of company. And we also understand that those needs may change.

As a reflection of this, there are no set visiting times – this is our residents’ home and loved ones are free to visit whenever they wish and residents are free to come and go as they please, as long as it’s deemed safe for them to do so and we’re aware of the arrangements. And while we don’t accept pets, we do allow pet visits and also run pet therapy sessions.

This emphasis on choice even filters down to the range and type of accommodation available: there is something to suit all budgets and requirements and you can read more about our accommodation and fees here

The reassurance of around-the-clock care

At Lavenders we offer full-time, around-the-clock care to our residents. We also provide respite and holiday care to those who need help on a temporary basis, and we often welcome our respite guests back time and time again. We believe this is due to our ethos that every single resident is to be treated as an individual and with empathy, respect and kindness.

We pride ourselves on our excellent standards. This extends from the level care right through to the quality of accommodation, food, enrichment and activities programme and above all, our staff – many of who have been with us for a very long time. This long experience with us means staff are able to offer consistency of care, along with heart-felt commitment to the job of caring. You can read more about our wonderful team here.

A full and busy life

There is never any need to feel bored at Lavenders. Our energetic and enthusiastic Activity Co-ordinators are an integral part of the team and offer a full and broad range of activities to suit all tastes, from board games and bingo to pet therapy visits, gardening club, exercise classes, pamper sessions, poetry and pub lunches, to name but a few.

We also have a minibus, which is fully adapted for wheelchair users, and we use it regularly to visit venues of our residents’ choosing. Everyone gets a say in where we go on our day trips, and we have enjoyed pub lunches, trips to the seaside and boat trips. We also enjoy going to local primary schools for performances and the schools come and visit us for celebrations, special events, or just to enjoy afternoon tea. You can read more about our busy activity schedule here – where you’ll discover that it is full of choice for all.

Freshly prepared meals

From day one, right back in 1983, mealtimes have always been a highlight at Lavenders. We understand the importance of good quality, seasonal, fresh food in terms of health, happiness and wellbeing.

We pride ourselves on the really high standards set by our talented catering team, who create delicious meals using seasonal, often locally sourced, produce. All dietary requirements are catered for, including vegetarian, gluten free, lactose free and diabetic. You can view sample menus here. We must also mention the amazing freshly baked cakes that we all enjoy, too!

Help with settling in

We understand that a move to a care home can be an unsettling time. Our years of experience, trained staff and commitment to care mean that we know how to help you through this period of transition. We offer no-commitment trial periods so that prospective residents can experience what life is like here first hand, and we also offer full family support at all times.

We pride ourselves on communication, so you will be kept fully up to date with life here at Lavenders. Our care home has excellent Wi-Fi, so Skype calls or FaceTime chats with your loved one are not a problem. Our Facebook page is regularly updated with all our news so you can keep abreast of what’s going on and a regular newsletter is sent out so that friends and family can share all the exciting news about daily events.

Giving back

At Lavenders we put a lot of focus on giving back to our community in as many ways as possible. We have excellent links with our neighbours here in West Malling, with lots of outreach opportunities to collaborate with local schools and businesses. We reduce, reuse and recycle as much as we can and have installed energy efficient boilers. Our fresh ingredients come from local suppliers wherever possible, to support local businesses and reduce our carbon footprint.
